Short answer: a safe, regulated lash brand can show you that each product has a named UK or EU Responsible Person, a Cosmetic Product Safety Report (CPSR), a product notification (SCPN in the UK, CPNP in the EU), full ingredient labelling with batch numbers, and a Safety Data Sheet. If a supplier can't give you these, don't use the product on clients.
Why This Matters for Lash Artists
Lash lift, tint and adhesive products are used millimetres from the eye. In the UK and EU, cosmetic products must meet strict legal safety rules before they are sold. As the professional applying them, your name, your insurance and your reputation sit on every treatment, so knowing your products are compliant is part of doing the job properly.
The 7-Point Checklist
- A named Responsible Person. Every cosmetic sold in the UK must have a UK Responsible Person (and an EU Responsible Person for the EU) whose name and address appear on the packaging. This is the company legally accountable for the product's safety.
- A Cosmetic Product Safety Report (CPSR). Each formula must be assessed by a qualified safety assessor. A reputable brand will confirm the product has a CPSR when you ask.
- Product notification. Products sold in Great Britain must be notified on the SCPN (Submit Cosmetic Product Notification) portal, and EU products on the CPNP portal.
- Full, correct labelling. Look for the full INCI ingredient list, batch number, period-after-opening or expiry date, net quantity, the Responsible Person's address, and clear warnings and directions.
- A Safety Data Sheet (SDS). Professional products, especially adhesives and lifting solutions, should come with an SDS for safe handling and storage.
- Good Manufacturing Practice. Ask whether products are made to GMP standards such as ISO 22716. Proper manufacturing is what keeps every batch consistent.
- A traceable supplier. A real company address, VAT and company details, professional-only sales, and someone you can contact if a client has a reaction.
Red Flags to Avoid
- No ingredient list, or a list written only in another language
- No batch number, expiry date or Responsible Person on the pack
- Prices far below the market, or unbranded bulk products from marketplaces
- A seller who can't answer questions or provide safety documents
- Professional-strength products sold to anyone, with no check of qualifications
How Unregulated Products Affect Your Business Long Term
Cheaper, unregulated products can look like a saving, but the long-term costs are much bigger:
- Client safety. Unknown ingredients and strengths raise the risk of irritation, allergic reactions, chemical burns and damaged or broken lashes.
- Insurance. Many insurers expect you to use compliant products and follow the manufacturer's instructions. Using unregulated products may put your cover at risk if a claim is made.
- Legal liability. If a client is harmed, you may be held responsible, and without a traceable supplier there is no one else accountable.
- Reputation. One bad reaction shared online can undo years of reviews and referrals.
- Inconsistent results. Uncontrolled batches lift differently each time, which costs you rebookings and repeat clients.
- Growth. Salons, academies and stockists increasingly ask about product compliance. Working with regulated products keeps those doors open.
